Autorouting vs AI PCB design
PCBBench editorial · Published October 14, 2026 · Editorial policy
Autorouting solves a routing problem on a defined board state. End-to-end PCB design also includes requirements, circuit choices, libraries, placement and manufacturing handoff. A strong routing result does not establish competence across that whole chain.
Identify the router's inputs
Document whether components are already placed and whether the outline, stackup and rules are fixed. Some workflows include placement or optimization; describe those capabilities explicitly instead of relying on the product's label.
Evaluate circuit creation separately
Component selection and schematic generation introduce electrical decisions before routing begins. Wrong device ratings, missing protection or an unsuitable pin assignment cannot be corrected by a router that faithfully implements the supplied netlist.
Match evidence to the claim
Use routing metrics for the routing task and complete deliverables for an end-to-end claim. A fabrication-ready package requires more than connected tracks, and a successful physical board adds evidence beyond file-level validation.
Practical checklist
- State the input board condition.
- Separate placement and routing.
- Validate circuit requirements first.
- Check native outputs and exports.
- Label physical test evidence separately.
A concrete example
A router completes a supplied sensor board.
- Evidence to accept
- The result is reported as routing performance on that input.
- Evidence that is insufficient
- Routing success is used to claim the system independently selected parts and designed the circuit.
Common questions
Can an autorouter be part of an AI design agent?
Yes. It can serve as one tool inside a larger workflow.
Is a fully routed board necessarily valid?
No. Check intended connectivity, design rules and the underlying circuit requirements.

How this fits PCBBench
The AI PCB placement and routing benchmark describes the proposed inputs, outputs and checks for this capability. The pilot snapshot contains partial measured attempts; it is not a finished ranking.
