Netlist equivalence for AI schematic validation

PCBBench editorial · Published October 14, 2026 · Editorial policy

Netlist equivalence checks whether the required electrical connections survived a generated or edited schematic. It should ignore visual rearrangement while remaining strict about component identity, pin mappings and the connections the task requires.

Define equivalence for the task

Exact netlist matching is useful for a constrained edit, but too strict for open-ended synthesis. Decide whether alternate topologies, extra test points, equivalent passive networks or different part choices are allowed. Encode these choices before reviewing a model's output.

Normalize labels without losing meaning

Reference designators and net names may change without changing the circuit. Compare the graph of component pins and nets, using stable roles where necessary. Do not normalize away pin numbers or intentionally distinct signals just to make two graphs match.

Pair connectivity with behavioral tests

Equivalent connectivity does not guarantee suitable values or ratings. A wrong feedback resistor can preserve the graph while changing the output voltage. Use numeric constraints or simulation for those requirements and report which verification layer failed.

Practical checklist

  1. Choose exact or requirement-based equivalence.
  2. Preserve pin identities.
  3. Normalize only permitted naming differences.
  4. Check forbidden collateral edits.
  5. Validate values separately from topology.

A concrete example

An ECO moves a sensor to another bus.

Evidence to accept
Only the required bus connections change; power and unrelated interfaces retain their intended connectivity.
Evidence that is insufficient
The graph matches after the grader discards the sensor's pin-number distinction.

Common questions

Can two different topologies both pass?

Yes, when the task permits alternatives and each satisfies the electrical requirements.

Is a netlist comparison a schematic diff?

It is an electrical comparison. A useful review also checks values, library references and project changes outside the netlist.

How this fits PCBBench

The AI schematic generation benchmark describes the proposed inputs, outputs and checks for this capability. The pilot snapshot contains partial measured attempts; it is not a finished ranking.
