How to test AI schematic generation
PCBBench editorial · Published October 14, 2026 · Editorial policy
A schematic generator should be tested on electrical intent rather than how closely its drawing resembles a reference. Accept alternative implementations when they satisfy the same requirements, and reject electrically wrong circuits even when they look polished.
Translate the brief into observable requirements
List required rails, interfaces, protection functions and operating conditions. Identify which requirements can be checked from connectivity, which require datasheet reasoning, and which need simulation. This prevents the grader from rewarding a familiar topology while overlooking a missing function.
Check the model of each component
Confirm the manufacturer part number, package and symbol pin mapping. A correct-looking regulator symbol can still connect the wrong physical pins. Verify the exact device variant and distinguish optional reference-design components from requirements imposed by its datasheet or the task.
Separate drawing quality from correctness
Use ERC and netlist checks for electrical structure. Review labels, page organization and readability separately. If a human must infer an unlabeled connection or repair a library reference, record the correction instead of treating it as a cosmetic issue that disappears from the result.
Practical checklist
- Capture requirements before seeing the answer.
- Resolve every component to an exact part.
- Compare pin-level connectivity.
- Run ERC with unchanged severities.
- Simulate behavior where a suitable model exists.
A concrete example
Generate a regulator and sensor interface for a specified supply range.
- Evidence to accept
- The rail meets the required load and the sensor connections match the exact datasheet pinout.
- Evidence that is insufficient
- The schematic is ERC-clean but the regulator cannot maintain the requested output at the lowest input.
Common questions
Must the generated topology match the reference?
No. The acceptance test should permit electrically valid alternatives unless the brief explicitly constrains the topology.
Can simulation replace schematic review?
Simulation only covers modeled behavior and test conditions. Ratings, connectors and unmodeled functions still need review.

How this fits PCBBench
The AI schematic generation benchmark describes the proposed inputs, outputs and checks for this capability. The pilot snapshot contains partial measured attempts; it is not a finished ranking.
