How to validate an AI-generated PCB footprint

PCBBench editorial · Published October 14, 2026 · Editorial policy

Validate a footprint against the exact manufacturer's package drawing and the intended assembly process. Package family names are insufficient: two devices described as the same package can require different pin numbering or land geometry.

Resolve the package variant

Save the datasheet revision and orderable part suffix. Identify whether the drawing is a top view, bottom view or recommended land pattern. Keep body dimensions separate from land dimensions, and convert units explicitly before calculating pad positions.

Check geometry and connectivity separately

Inspect pad count, numbers, pitch, size, rotation and exposed-pad treatment. Then check the symbol-to-footprint mapping. An attractive 3D view cannot establish that pad one and the symbol's pin one represent the same physical connection.

Review assembly and mechanical context

Inspect solder mask, paste, courtyard and board-edge constraints for the chosen process. Confirm the component's envelope and orientation in the board context. A correct isolated footprint can still collide with another part or obstruct a connector.

Practical checklist

  1. Match exact package and revision.
  2. Confirm drawing view and units.
  3. Check every pad number and position.
  4. Review mask, paste and exposed pads.
  5. Verify symbol mapping and fit.

A concrete example

Generate a QFN footprint from a manufacturer drawing.

Evidence to accept
Pad numbering, pitch and exposed-pad details match that exact device and assembly intent.
Evidence that is insufficient
The body outline matches, but the pad sequence is mirrored from the wrong drawing view.

Common questions

Is a 3D model enough to validate a footprint?

No. It helps inspect mechanical fit, while electrical mapping and copper geometry need independent checks.

Should all footprint variants share a name?

Use names that distinguish meaningful package or land-pattern differences and preserve their source documentation.

How this fits PCBBench

The PCB symbol and footprint benchmark describes the proposed inputs, outputs and checks for this capability. The pilot snapshot contains partial measured attempts; it is not a finished ranking.
