From datasheet to KiCad symbol: validation checklist

PCBBench editorial · Published October 14, 2026 · Editorial policy

A generated KiCad symbol should preserve the datasheet's pin numbers and electrical functions for the exact part variant. Readable graphics are useful, but the pin table and its mapping to the physical package are the correctness boundary.

Extract the exact pin table

Record package-dependent pin assignments, alternate functions and any exposed or internally connected pads. Distinguish a signal's name from its pin number. Where a datasheet covers several variants, keep the selected variant visible throughout symbol creation.

Choose electrical types intentionally

Electrical pin types influence ERC. Check power inputs, outputs, passive connections and intentionally unused pins against the device's behavior. Do not label every pin passive simply to suppress diagnostic messages on a generated design.

Test the symbol in a small circuit

Place the symbol, attach a representative footprint and inspect the netlist mapping. Check that hidden pins, multi-unit organization and alternate pin functions behave as intended. Store the source revision so future fixes can be traced to the original evidence.

Practical checklist

  1. Select an exact part and package.
  2. Verify pin numbers against the table.
  3. Review electrical types.
  4. Include required power and exposed pins.
  5. Test the footprint mapping in a project.

A concrete example

Create a symbol for a sensor with several package options.

Evidence to accept
The selected orderable variant has the correct supply, interface and reserved-pin assignments.
Evidence that is insufficient
Pins from two package tables are combined into one plausible-looking symbol.

Common questions

Can symbol graphics differ from the datasheet?

Yes. The drawing can be reorganized for readability if the electrical meaning and mapping remain correct.

Should unused pins be omitted?

Follow the exact device documentation and project conventions. Omission must not conceal a required connection.

How this fits PCBBench

The PCB symbol and footprint benchmark describes the proposed inputs, outputs and checks for this capability. The pilot snapshot contains partial measured attempts; it is not a finished ranking.
