PCB design benchmarks vs electronics question answering

PCBBench editorial · Published October 14, 2026 · Editorial policy

Question-answer benchmarks test whether a model can return correct information. Design benchmarks test whether it can produce or modify engineering artifacts under constraints. Both can be useful, but their scores answer different questions.

Examine the required output

A numeric answer, multiple-choice response or explanation can test knowledge and reasoning. A native schematic, footprint or routed board additionally tests whether the system can express its intent in a tool-compatible artifact.

Inspect the acceptance evidence

Answer keys and semantic similarity may suit some questions. Circuit artifacts need connectivity, geometry and behavioral checks tied to their requirements. Fluent explanations should not substitute for a valid generated file.

Use a capability profile

Knowledge, datasheet interpretation and practical tool use can fail independently. Report them separately before computing an aggregate. A system that answers every component question correctly may still fail at footprint mapping or board release.

Practical checklist

  1. Identify output format.
  2. Inspect the grading oracle.
  3. Separate knowledge and artifact tasks.
  4. Check native-file validity.
  5. Avoid comparing unrelated aggregate scores.

A concrete example

Compare a datasheet quiz with a schematic synthesis task.

Evidence to accept
Each result is labeled with the capability and artifact it actually tests.
Evidence that is insufficient
A quiz score is described as the percentage of boards a model can successfully design.

Common questions

Should knowledge tasks be removed?

No. They can diagnose useful capabilities, provided their meaning is clear.

Can one leaderboard include both?

Yes, with visible suite scores, justified weights and a clear description of the aggregate.

How this fits PCBBench

The Electronics reasoning benchmark describes the proposed inputs, outputs and checks for this capability. The pilot snapshot contains partial measured attempts; it is not a finished ranking.
