How to measure the cost of AI PCB design

PCBBench editorial · Published October 14, 2026 · Editorial policy

Measure AI PCB design cost per attempted task and per successfully completed task. Include retries and engineering intervention, and label token list-price equivalents separately from the amount actually billed through a subscription or API.

Define the cost boundary

Decide whether the analysis covers model inference, the whole software workflow or a finished engineering deliverable. Record tool charges and human review separately. Comparing an API-only number with a fully reviewed design cost creates an apparent advantage that comes from accounting choices.

Keep every attempt in the denominator

Log failures, retries and interrupted runs under a published policy. If a task is solved only after several attempts, its cost includes the preceding work. Use the same completion criteria for every entrant so a cheaper incomplete output is not counted as equivalent success.

Preserve a pricing snapshot

Record provider route, date, input and output accounting, and any cached or reasoning-token treatment. Subscription access can make the actual bill differ from a token-derived estimate. Publish both when they are known, and avoid describing an estimate as a measured charge.

Practical checklist

  1. Choose a cost boundary.
  2. Record all attempts and retries.
  3. Separate billed and list-equivalent cost.
  4. Include required human correction.
  5. Compare under identical acceptance criteria.

A concrete example

A model needs three attempts before producing an acceptable board.

Evidence to accept
The successful-deliverable cost includes all three attempts and the recorded review work.
Evidence that is insufficient
Only the cheapest successful response is counted while failed runs disappear.

Common questions

Can the lowest token price produce the highest total cost?

Yes. Longer attempts, lower completion rates and more human repair can outweigh a lower unit price.

What if no tasks are solved?

Report the attempted cost and zero solved tasks. Cost per solved task is undefined, not zero.

How this fits PCBBench

The End-to-end AI PCB design benchmark describes the proposed inputs, outputs and checks for this capability. The pilot snapshot contains partial measured attempts; it is not a finished ranking.
