Evaluation
AI model vs PCB design agent: what to benchmark
PCBBench editorial · Published October 14, 2026 · Editorial policy
A model benchmark holds the surrounding tools and policy as constant as possible. An agent benchmark evaluates the full workflow, including planning, EDA integration and repair. State which system produced the result.
Define the system boundary
Record model route, instructions, available tools, budgets and feedback. The same model may perform differently with a netlist checker, a graphical editor or an automated repair loop. That difference belongs to the evaluated system, not necessarily the underlying model.
Compare like with like
Use a common reference harness when comparing model behavior. Use an agent track when comparing complete products. If a product receives human help or extra attempts, preserve that information instead of assigning all improvement to model capability.
Report where the work succeeds
Break down performance across reasoning, libraries, schematics, review and layout. A workflow can be useful because it validates and repairs outputs, even when the first model response is weak. Cost and time should include the entire selected boundary.
Practical checklist
- Label model and agent tracks.
- Record tools and instructions.
- Equalize budgets where appropriate.
- Log repair and human assistance.
- Measure the whole workflow cost.
A concrete example
One model is evaluated directly and inside a PCB editor agent.
- Evidence to accept
- The report distinguishes reference-harness performance from agent-assisted completion.
- Evidence that is insufficient
- An agent's repaired result is presented as the model's unaided first response.
Common questions
Can a product beat its underlying model's baseline?
Yes. Tools, validation and repair can improve the workflow; report the comparison under matched tasks.
Which track should I use when buying software?
The complete workflow track usually reflects the product experience, while the model track helps explain one part of it.

How this fits PCBBench
The End-to-end AI PCB design benchmark describes the proposed inputs, outputs and checks for this capability. The pilot snapshot contains partial measured attempts; it is not a finished ranking.
