Reviewing AI-generated PCB power supplies
PCBBench editorial · Published October 14, 2026 · Editorial policy
Review a generated power supply at the operating conditions the product actually requires. Match the exact regulator, external components and board implementation to the manufacturer's documentation rather than accepting a generic reference circuit.
Check the complete operating envelope
List input extremes, output demand, transients and startup expectations. Distinguish recommended operating conditions from absolute limits. For a linear regulator, check dropout and dissipation at the relevant load; for switching circuits, review the exact device's component and layout requirements.
Verify external components
Check values, tolerances, ratings and the conditions under which the component behaves as assumed. A nominal capacitance or inductor value is not the whole specification. Document the source for every requirement that determines acceptance.
Inspect the board implementation
Trace the power and return loops and compare critical placement with device-specific guidance. Check thermal assumptions and connector current paths. A simulation built from ideal elements does not establish that the physical layout meets the same behavior.
Practical checklist
- Define input and load conditions.
- Check the exact device variant.
- Verify external component requirements.
- Review power and return paths.
- Document thermal and startup evidence.
A concrete example
Review an LDO rail for a battery-powered product.
- Evidence to accept
- The operating envelope, dissipation and required capacitor behavior are checked for the exact part.
- Evidence that is insufficient
- Only the regulator's maximum advertised current is compared with the load.
Common questions
Can ERC check regulator stability?
ERC does not establish analog stability. Use device documentation and appropriate analysis or measurements.
Can a reference layout be copied blindly?
Its assumptions may differ. Verify package, stackup, components and operating conditions before applying it.

How this fits PCBBench
The AI PCB design review benchmark describes the proposed inputs, outputs and checks for this capability. The pilot snapshot contains partial measured attempts; it is not a finished ranking.
