Bring-up
PCB bring-up evidence for an AI design benchmark
PCBBench editorial · Published October 14, 2026 · Editorial policy
Physical bring-up provides evidence that design-file checks cannot supply. Define the intended observations before testing and record the exact board revision, assembly state and firmware so a successful demonstration can be interpreted correctly.
Plan observations by subsystem
List the supply rails, communication interfaces and required product behaviors. Define what evidence establishes each result and which instruments or fixtures are needed. Use the product's documented operating limits rather than generic values copied from another board.
Keep assembly and firmware traceable
Record substitutions, rework, jumper settings and the loaded firmware revision. A board that works only after a wire repair should be reported as repaired success, not first-build success. Preserve observations for failed units instead of showing only the best specimen.
Connect failures back to the design
Distinguish design defects from assembly faults, test-fixture issues and firmware problems. Document the evidence for that classification. Feed confirmed design failures back into the benchmark's acceptance tests without retroactively changing the published grading policy in secret.
Practical checklist
- Record board and firmware revisions.
- Define subsystem observations.
- Log substitutions and rework.
- Preserve failed-unit evidence.
- Separate first-build and repaired success.
A concrete example
Build a sensor board generated from a fixed brief.
- Evidence to accept
- The report records the required interfaces and sensor operation, including any rework.
- Evidence that is insufficient
- A power LED is used as proof that every interface and sensing function works.
Common questions
Does enumeration prove the whole board works?
It proves one observable behavior. The remaining requirements need their own tests.
Can simulation results be included?
Yes, but label them separately from measurements on physical hardware.

How this fits PCBBench
The PCB bring-up and debug benchmark describes the proposed inputs, outputs and checks for this capability. The pilot snapshot contains partial measured attempts; it is not a finished ranking.
